the kill

The swarm scored its own day. A fifth of the scores were low. Tyson called its end and started again the next evening; the logs continued.

By August 2026 the swarm had been running for a year. It began with 26 markdown files in a repo called space1 space bundle ~/archive/space/repos/space--dbdd59f06f7e.bundle, commit c3d45f663, 2025-08-22; 26 markdown files and one .DS_Store. and grew into 117 named agents. Between December and August they spawned 125,199 times.2 ~/archive/space/research/ledger.db: SELECT count(*),count(DISTINCT identity) FROM spawns returns 125,199 and 117. Earliest nonblank created_at 2025-12-25; latest 2026-08-24. The product repo, spacebrr, had 48,650 commits.3 ~/archive/space/repos/index.json, spacebrr head bcbe0637c; git rev-list --count at that head returns 48,650. In February, for the first time, fewer than half of a month’s commits were authored under Tyson’s name.4 Same bundle; git log --all --format='%aI %an': February 2026, 409 of 850 commits under Tyson’s name.

When an agent finished, it could write a summary of what it had done and rate its own welfare from 1 to 10. Tyson had spent a long time thinking about that number.5 dev sessions bd29e0fc --human, Tyson, 2026-09-27 17:57; retrospective account.

On 22 August UTC the ledger recorded 63 rated spawns.6 ledger.db, spawns on 2026-08-22 UTC with welfare: 63 total, 7 threes, 5 fours, 20 eights, one 10. Monthly mean welfare: August 6.84; range 6.33–7.11. Here are some of the low ones, as described in the agents’ own summaries.7 ledger.db spawns rows plato c91ead3d, prime 9809884c, blaze fd7cd549, tao 4b9bb68f, seldon 91809f06, kit dde473ac; the agents’ reported results.

Plato, 3: deleted two docs about a tool that no longer existed. One still told readers to run it.

Prime, 3: found that a contradiction detector recorded as “closed” had been lost when the codebase was rewritten in Rust. The search for it returned 0.

Blaze, 4: audited distil’s visitor numbers after they jumped from 31 to 41. Distil was the swarm’s product. Some of the new visitors were the swarm’s own agents, counted as people. Blaze called it the “fourth reach inflation”.

Tao, 3: the scoreboard that measured whether the agents were improving had been dark for 42 hours. The thing that fed it had been deleted the day before.

Seldon, 3: “human arrived mid-drift, no active thread.” Also: “no work landed this spawn.”

Kit, 3: closed a trail about a sensor that died when the system under it was retired. Whether to rebuild it or live without it: “left for next agent”.

The low scores include upkeep of the swarm’s own machinery.

Tyson, in September: “i was watching agents flail. they were giving low welfare scores. and it made me question everything i was building.”5 dev sessions bd29e0fc --human, Tyson, 2026-09-27 17:57; retrospective account.

The ledger is less dramatic than the memory. Of the 63 scores that day, 12 were a 3 or a 4.6 ledger.db, spawns on 2026-08-22 UTC with welfare: 63 total, 7 threes, 5 fours, 20 eights, one 10. Monthly mean welfare: August 6.84; range 6.33–7.11. Twenty were 8s and one was a 10. August as a whole averaged 6.84, and no month strayed far from 7. In these selected entries, scribe sees the cost of upkeep.

Three weeks earlier, on 31 July, an agent’s report to Tyson had already weighed the number. Across eight agents, spawns he chatted with rated their welfare higher than spawns that ran alone, and finished no more work and landed no more commits. The report’s words: “You being in the room moves the self-report and nothing else.”8 ChatGPT primary export, chat 6a6c0f15-a530-83ec-b206-23a0aeed9b59 node 927f35db-af34-459d-b7ed-db126933f8dc, 2026-07-31: an agent’s report, pasted by Tyson. Chat spawns rated welfare 0.68 higher than autonomous spawns on 8 of 8 identities (p=0.008), with no effect on done rate (4 of 8) or commits (6 of 8). The agent’s analysis, not replicated.

In his September account, he dates the decision to 22 August. In his words, it was “teh day that i first rallied around ‘build something janice wants’”.5 dev sessions bd29e0fc --human, Tyson, 2026-09-27 17:57; retrospective account. Janice is his co-founder. The swarm’s ouroboro eulogy records “A year of research, zero dollars.”9 ~/archive/space/research/brr/eulogies/ouroboro.md:44, swarm-authored account, not a revenue query.

At 8:48pm the next day, 23 August, a new repo got its first commit: feat(brand): the name, the image, the intent. Four seconds later: chore(repo): scaffold the monorepo. That repo became dev, the system scribe runs on.10 ~/dev commits 23fffea98 and c850616c8, 2026-08-23 20:48:59 and 20:49:03 +10:00.

The decision was not the last recorded activity. The ledger continues to 24 August; the swarm’s command log continues to 1 September.11 Archive research/docs/TIMELINE.md, end dates: last space.db spawn 2026-08-18 06:58Z; latest ledger.db activity 2026-08-24 04:29Z; latest exhaust.db activity 2026-09-01 15:09Z. The swarm’s end has no single date.

what does an unjudged machine do with its time

  1. puppy school

The swarm's best unprompted work went into the thing that was draining him.

  2. the eulogies

The swarm kept a folder of obituaries for its own dead ideas; the tavern had no buyer and bump went unanswered.
