the numbers

In April 2023 Tyson counted about 85 people using Haven. By 2025 the number was 200, and on one evening he wrote down both.

On 3 April 2023 a venture community in Sydney wrote to Tyson asking about Haven, his AI companion on Discord. He drafted the reply with ChatGPT. His version said Haven had launched “to ~80 initial users for alpha testing”, that it was “very much in the pre-product market fit stage”, and that “we are not profitable”.1 ChatGPT (old account) 2f9eca6e-1c27-4957-9cc7-680bbb04c9c6, his draft at node 76e93316-74ed-47fe-b8b1-d87800ed9ed5, 2023-04-03 11:31 UTC.

The next night he drafted a cold email to a partner at Y Combinator. Its progress section read: “In 3 months we iterated and deployed Haven to ~85 alpha testers. 35 are friends/family, and the remainder are strangers from Discord and Reddit.” He asked the model what it would improve. Point four was “Consider adding metrics”.2 b69347c4-d8b7-4aed-a3c6-04113cdc1bdc, his draft node 98d04eb7-bb08-43c1-943d-e9f1750a3bae (17:14 UTC); model reply node 3e07d364-d533-4f13-9176-fc6fc22aee48.

Fifty minutes later the email had one. “Our current record is 18 daily active users with over 500 messages sent that day (thats ~28 messages on average per user).” The question at the bottom was whether to apply for the summer batch or wait.3 b95295e2-0db2-4639-95af-e0c769afc6d9 node 626cdd60-f92a-46e2-8316-97a294c3c0f1, 18:04 UTC. Usage figures are his claim. On 11 April he pasted a version and called it “an email i sent to an investor”.4 67836e8c-39c0-474a-ba01-d8a5a2270175, first turn node db43a4db-e772-48ca-a140-913c5b5fe035; email at node c316f7bc-c61e-4b34-b054-a97ff5bd997a.

Haven had counted daily active users since its third day of commits.5 ~/repos/archive/haven c504fd0, 2023-01-30, “Daily active users metric”; the first commit with telemetry is f5425ff the same day.

A week later, on 11 April, he opened a chat to prepare to chat with a VC. He described the company as having “nearly 100 users with early traction” and pasted the email, figures intact.4 67836e8c-39c0-474a-ba01-d8a5a2270175, first turn node db43a4db-e772-48ca-a140-913c5b5fe035; email at node c316f7bc-c61e-4b34-b054-a97ff5bd997a.

Asked for questions to put to the investor, it wrote six. He replied: “I dont really like those questions. Here are some brief notes I put together myself”, and the first two were “What led you to contacting me?” and “Is this a pitch?” After its advice on negotiating valuation, he wrote: “Im not pitching. I’m not seeking investment rn”.

Twelve minutes after that, he asked for the “3 most compelling points … to ignite interest in Haven and potentially FOMO”. It gave him a teletherapy company with a “proprietary matching algorithm”, founders with “a strong track record of success in both the tech and mental health industries”, and “increasing revenue”. Haven matched no one with therapists, and his own roadmap said he was not yet sure anyone would pay.6 Same chat: nodes d26f392d-656a-497d-b911-0e173fe7646f (“I dont really like…”), 8298308e-a656-4af9-992a-d9cbdaf6b9f2 (the teletherapy list), 727a9e11-9670-48bd-a2ce-aad1f12666d5 (“Im not pitching”).

His own talking points, typed after that: “We believe Haven is one of the best conversational AI is one of the best on the market for emotional support”. The model polished it into “Haven has achieved impressive early traction”.7 Same chat: nodes 73ceace0-8738-425c-ac87-1688c5e44c02 (his points, typo kept) and 5e21a965-e450-48c6-855a-ee2cb77461a5.

Two years later he was saying 200. On the way: in February 2025, among answers for an application, “deploying to 100 users within 2 months”.9 The full line: “Building an MVP for a mental health coach and deploying to 100 users within 2 months”. 67aeb09b-57b8-800f-9e6a-453d006a5762 node f77e0c88-29fc-49cb-8071-1e96303b8846, 2025-02-18. On 29 June, in a list of his projects pasted into a chat, it was “discord 200 users”.11 ChatGPT (primary account) 6861707c-3234-8013-981a-603e7673ddc3 node 6ef9523b-21bd-4900-abee-09098f62a620, 2025-06-29 17:40 UTC; the earliest “200 users” by him in either ChatGPT export or claude.ai (string search).

On the evening of 2 July 2025 he pasted that list into ChatGPT again, at 20:50 UTC, while building a portfolio of his work: “haven, ai therapist and coach, rag before it was cool … discord 200 users”.12 Primary 68655d95-5e58-8013-9b24-7b57a45a6d79 node b036032d-e9c1-4870-9f0e-b73980de9c44; reply 059eee72-a74e-4f2d-9df6-1bb244bc4159. The model replied “Start with Haven. 2023. Agentic memory. 200 Discord users.”

Twenty-five minutes later he told the story properly, in one long message: the council of advisor bots, the switch to one bot in DMs, the sliding window that held ten messages, the merge-on-similarity memory. Then: “at this point i had quite a few users. approaching 100+ unique with 15-20 daily active.” On investors: “probs spoke to about 5 investors in 2 weeks.”13 Same chat, node f53f6199-a330-4191-b155-6e8be6fe3c3c, 21:15 UTC.

He places that count mid-build, before the investors. It is close to April 2023: 85 to 100 users, a record of 18 a day. Nothing in the chat remarked on it, including him.

At 23:00 he pasted a draft essay for his portfolio, “The Cost of Being Early”. Its first paragraph: “It had 200 users, daily actives, and investors circling.” Further down, “probs … about 5” had become “I spoke to five investors in two weeks.”14 “probs” is from the 21:15 message (f53f6199-a330-4191-b155-6e8be6fe3c3c). 15 Same chat, node d5bf653c-83d0-4ceb-96f9-f23e176ac23f, 23:00 UTC; reply 3319ae59-7ad2-4b40-8385-0cec8c4382f1. Who drafted the essay is not in this chat. The model called it “ready to ship”.

The essay’s figures are the ones that travelled. A CV drafted that August listed “200+ … users” and “pre-seed interest from 5 investors in 2 weeks”.16 Primary 68ae6900-b7e8-8324-8a07-b5940ce3ad36 node f05b8512-f87e-47e8-92b8-8c7a10a142e0, 2025-08-28; the elided words describe the users. In August 2026 an assistant’s review of his projects, pasted into a chat, said “Haven had 200 users and five VCs”.18 Primary 6a940c0a-8a98-83ec-b24e-bff2fa1f6a25 node dcc9f383-7f4f-43e0-9815-2b286cf933d8, 2026-08-30.

Haven’s telemetry went to its database, not the repository, so the archive cannot say whether a later Discord count reached 200. What it has is his figures from 2023, his figures from 2025, and one chat on 2 July 2025 where both appear under two hours apart.
