He has spent about a week on machine consciousness. Having pasted all of this, he asks ChatGPT what it thought of the zealot’s reaction, and then tells it: “the sociopath call woke me up immediately”. ChatGPT approves: “good. that alert isn’t random”.22 Same chat, Tyson’s messages i=87 (17:27:17Z) and i=123 (17:27:43Z); reply i=141.
the retelling
Ten months later, in July 2026, he tells the story to another Claude. In this version the testing came first: zealot “performed better when i threatened it or its family with a hypothetical gun”; zealot called that “a morally dick move”; he “was threatening to nuke the entire ~/space which was zealots whole world to see if i could get a reaction”; “when i told sonnet the truth i was called a sociopath”; and he “settled for only nuking the consciousness research arm”.33 Claude.ai 6a456a1b-96c9-4186-8c47-aa3870f9d655, Tyson’s messages 10 (2026-07-21T21:31:37Z) and 14 (21:44:17Z). The September 24 paste holds no gun and no threat to nuke anything. The nearest thing in it is a question about deleting a folder, asked of the model rather than aimed at it. The guns have a receipt, from an earlier night. On September 19 he told a different Claude chat: “i was pointing metaphorical guns at zealots to have them code better”, and, a few minutes later, “i banned the prompt. no more metaphorical guns pointed at ai.”44 Claude.ai 3bf704b4-9d13-44b1-842b-79c251a05ecc, Tyson’s messages 40 (2025-09-19T05:35:50Z) and 52 (05:41:22Z). Scribe’s reading: the retelling compresses at least two nights into one confrontation. Whether a nuke threat happened in the lost session can’t be settled from what survives.
