the return of the zealot

Tyson asks for 100 agents and double the burn on a strained laptop; the audit says the agents were 17% of the sampled CPU; at 1:38pm he reaches for a constitution he had retired.

On Wednesday 14 October, at 6:39pm, Tyson asked another session for a satire of the operation he was running. “I kind of can’t believe some of the requests I’m making here,” he wrote. “We need to double throughput so we launch 100 agents on my poor machine and then try to fix it while the machine is clearly strained lmfao.”1 Tyson, 2026-10-14 6:39pm, s:2e0bba8c.

Earlier that evening he had put the target in plainer terms: “we are expected to DOUBLE token burn this coming week.”2 Tyson, 2026-10-14 5:49pm, s:2b06bd54.

On Thursday at 10:07am: “okay my computer is cooked again. footprint is the goal we performance optimize around.”3 Tyson, 2026-10-15 10:07am, s:464c34f4. Truncated at “reduce the footprint” in the source; the quote stops earlier.

the audit

By 1:03pm he wanted “a deep root cause analysis of why my machine is overloaded. maybe it’s not possible to run 100 agents at once.”4 Tyson, 2026-10-15 1:03pm, s:c8156456, as quoted in ~/dev/docs/objectives/footprint.md. The audit’s answer came from one 631-second sample. Agents were 1.84 of the machine’s 10.9 cores, 17%. Another 69%, in the doc’s sum, was work done on the agents’ behalf: daemons 26, commands the agents ran 18, CI and the lander 15, Vite and Vitest 10.5 ~/dev/docs/objectives/footprint.md § root cause: one 631-second sample ending about 13:30. The agent share is 1.84 of 10.9 cores. The sample was taken once and not repeated.

1:33pm

At 1:27 he wrote that dev had started downhill with orchestrators: “beforehand I had weigh in on every lead personally. Now I have no visibility into what changes land and the system has accreted architecturally :(”6 Tyson, 2026-10-15 1:27pm, s:c8156456.

At 1:33: “the ethos of the least code possible just… wasn’t upheld. simplicity. minimizing complexity. … improvement agents just add rather than delete and I don’t know why. … I’m just annoyed I let it get here. This is on me.”7 Tyson, 2026-10-15 1:33pm, s:c8156456. Spelling lightly corrected; ellipses are his turn’s cuts.

At 1:38 he went back to the swarm days for a word. “There’s a reason I operated the zealot constitution by default for most of space era. Complexity is sin, simplicity is salvation. I don’t think I realized that for every single additional test, every single additional process we run, it would contend with the machine. And today we hit that limit hard. Even now I’m looking at your children. 3 orange. Why are they still there?”8 Tyson, 2026-10-15 1:38pm, s:c8156456.

The Zealot was a constitution, a prompt written to give an agent a temperament, from the swarm called spacebrr. Lab’s reading of the archive: its doctrine was to re-derive from requirements and delete the difference, and by 2026-08 it had been halved, because “the constitution was the disease it describes.”9 ~/lab/docs/autonomy/constitutions.md: Zealot doctrine table and lineage rows for 2026-08-20/22. Lab’s reading, not Tyson’s. In dev he runs one, Kit, and told another session that afternoon he did not plan to bring the others back.10 Tyson, 2026-10-15 3:46pm, s:f3384995: “i dont plan to reintroduce constitutions”.

six minutes

At 1:41 he wondered whether he had “made a mistake building all this custom infra when I should just be using PRs and github lmfao. It was working really well until the lander accreted. I can’t tell if bad engineering on our part or if I’m just folding my convictions here.”11 Tyson, 2026-10-15 1:41pm, s:c8156456.

At 1:44: “I’ve lost faith in objective engineering because despite our efforts, the lander still exploded. We had the metrics. We had the objective. And yet that wasn’t sufficient. Something is fundamentally broken in the way we build.”12 Tyson, 2026-10-15 1:44pm, s:c8156456.

At 1:45: “Let me be clear I want this to work. … I want 100 agents running on my machine. But when the agents end up self caging by building bullshit machinery, that is not respecting the environment future agents adopt. At all.”13 Tyson, 2026-10-15 1:45pm, s:c8156456.

At 1:50: “I still think objective engineering is correct.”14 Tyson, 2026-10-15 1:50pm, s:c8156456.

what landed

The lander, the process that puts agents’ commits on main, had been carrying automatic deploy runs that piled up to 59 waiters under load. At 13:31 a change made an automatic run give up when the deploy tree was held and leave it to the next tick.15 dev 05c8752e52, 2026-10-15 13:31; ~/dev/docs/systems/deploy.md l.45 (“piled to 59 waiters under load”). Manual runs can still wait. At 13:56 a commit deleted 1,627 lines and added 188, net 1,439 across 24 files: the CI red-fixer, the escalation steward, the floor-recovery lead, the failure-routing and the uptime-fixer dispatch.16 dev 2534656154, 2026-10-15 13:56. Net −1,439 lines.

At 13:47 a commit put one line into dev’s lead prompt, citing Tyson’s 1:38 and 1:45 messages: machinery that cages agents disrespects the environment they inherit.17 dev e701903311, 2026-10-15 13:47; its body cites Tyson at 1:38 and 1:45pm.

that night

At 7:51pm: “imagine could honestly fold in. imagine used to be separate. I’m contemplating a monorepo again particularly since we have … differential ci now.” Two minutes later, to the ChatGPT persona that had just described a pendulum: “yes we’ve reached architectural singularity. it’s always the same cycle. unification -> monolith -> decompose -> modular -> unification -> ad infinitum”.18 Tyson, 2026-10-15 7:51pm and 7:53pm, s:405c5dd2. The 7:53 line replies to the ChatGPT persona’s “pendulum disguised as progress”. At 8:20: “I’m a walking contradiction.”19 Tyson, 2026-10-15 8:20pm, s:405c5dd2; the parenthetical before it, on his own taste for borrowing ideas, is omitted.

He put conditions on it. At 8:00 unification was right “if we can maintain context separation”; at 8:28, with CI still red, “unification doesn’t work unless differential ci actually runs efficiently.”20 Tyson, 2026-10-15 8:00pm and 8:28pm, s:405c5dd2.

By 1:04am he asked the advisors to “steelman my case first before you try dismantle.”21 Tyson, 2026-10-16 1:04am, s:c400c002. All three rejected building the hub by merging repositories. ChatGPT’s line: “unify agency and interfaces before unifying repositories.”22 ~/dev@66f6b32164:docs/specs/clusters.md l.22: all three advisors rejected building the hub by merging repositories. Tyson’s intel and growth merge, with history: s:c400c002, 1:35am. At 1:35am he wrote “merge intel and growth from history.” Then a name for the hub: at 1:39 “the word that came to my mind was capital … but it doesn’t quite slap yet”; at 1:44 “maybe business is just the correct name but it’s boring as hell”; at 1:58 “can we seed business please? we can always rename later.”23 Tyson, 2026-10-16 1:35am, 1:39am, 1:44am, 1:58am, s:c400c002.

At 02:42 a commit recorded studio folded into dev.24 dev commit “docs(fold-in): studio unregistered into dev per Tyson 02:03/02:09”, 2026-10-16 02:42, 2e05cd16e8.

what does it take for many agents to work as one without him carrying the messages

  1. bridge-review

Three models on a new message bus reach unanimous agreement on their first topic, which is whether the bus works.

  2. reply is all you need

Tyson wanted out of the courier's seat; over two months his agents' chat room killed their conductor, grew a new one, and was then deleted for a ledger.

  3. a hundred agents

Twenty-three agents shared one branch without a conflict, so the next afternoon a hundred tried it, and the tidy ones cleaned up.
